Will my CFA exam be postponed due to COVID in my country or area?
- CFA Institute have stated that where allowed by local rules and regulations, the CFA exams will take place as scheduled.
- CFA Institute are working with (mainly) Prometric and British Council to administer CFA exams globally. So the test centers are run by either Prometric or British Council – you should be able to check which is it if you don’t know this already.
- To assess likelihood of CFA exam cancellation, you should therefore look at:
- COVID rules and regulations in your test center area
- Whether your test center is scheduled to close (Prometric link here)
- You can also call your test center to check
CFA exam rescheduling, location changes, cancellations: when and who will let me know?
- After scheduling your exam, Prometric will advise on exam logistics. If your test center operator is Prometric, they will be the ones to update you of any rescheduling, location changes, or cancellations.
- If your exam is cancelled, you will be notified by Prometric, but also be contacted by CFA Institute “within 15 days of cancellation” to provide additional info and next steps.
- Experience from previous exams tells us that cancellations, rescheduling and other changes can happen at any time, up to right before the exam. I know that sounds crazy and unacceptable, but COVID 🤦♂️ 🤷♂️
Let me know if you have more questions.

There are planned cancellations for India in these cities that overlap with May 2021 CFA exam windows:
- Mumbai, Maharashtra: Closed May 17, 2021 – May 20, 2021
- Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Closed May 17, 2021 – May 20, 2021
- Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra: Closed May 18, 23, 30 2021
These conflict with the May CFA exam exam windows across Levels 1, 2 and 3, but does not completely eliminate them. So this will likely result in rescheduling, which might have already been done and candidates informed.
In my opinion it is unlikely that the exam will be cancelled outright, but everyone should be prepared for some last-minute rescheduling or location changes. From the Prometric website:
From time to time, Prometric has to temporarily close a testing site for a variety of reasons including unforeseen events, such as extreme weather, natural disaster, power outages, technical issues, pandemic impacts or other circumstances. We provide test takers with as much advance notice of upcoming site closures as possible; we recognize in some cases there is limited opportunity to reach test takers well in advance.
So if there is a COVID outbreak in your test center the day before, everyone’s probably getting rescheduled or relocated. So check your test center frequently especially towards exam day.

New update on CFA Institute’s CFA Exam Test Center Updates page that states:
- Any decisions on cancellations, postponements and/or rescheduling will be made in early May, and not before then.
- If they can carry out the exam in your test center, they will.
- However if COVID makes taking the exam possible but difficult, CFA Institute may offer you a free deferral option to Nov-21. You will be emailed if this is the case for you.
- If your exam has to be cancelled, CFA Institute will email you to arrange a deferral. Nov-21 is the next available slot.

Hi @tushar1804, I’ve merged your question with this thread which @mikey and @zee have answered in detail above.

That’s right but I know so many people and students who’s family near and dear once are affected in this second wave of covid which is more dangerous. Due to which moral and focus of students have come down. The only suggestion is CFA institute should give a option of deferral for those students who want to take it.
-
::
Yes, this has been an intense topic of discussion throughout 2020, not just in India but globally. Unfortunately CFA Institute have to make difficult decisions to fairly coordinate not just what essentially are massive events held internationally but also consider exam security, etc.
If COVID in your area is bad enough to warrant test centers being closed, your issues will be addressed in some form by CFA Institute, as per my reply above:
- However if COVID makes taking the exam possible but difficult, CFA Institute may offer you a free deferral option to Nov-21. You will be emailed if this is the case for you.
- If your exam has to be cancelled, CFA Institute will email you to arrange a deferral. Nov-21 is the next available slot.

In India , Covid second wave is on peak and the Indian Government has imposed lockdown in many states including mine for the next 7 days atleast.
That’s why I am little worried about the chances of having cfa level 1 exams in May 2021.
Is there any there any procedure by which i can defer my may 2021 exam to subsequent attempt or I have to wait for any clarification from the Institute itself ?
Please guide me

Hi @AmanAggarwal, we’ve merged your question into this thread which discusses May 2021 cancellations as well.
It does look pretty serious in India at the moment. For now CFA Institute’s official line is can be summarized in these points:
- Any decisions on cancellations, postponements and/or rescheduling will be made in early May, and not before then.
- If they can carry out the exam in your test center, they will.
- However if COVID makes taking the exam possible but difficult, CFA Institute may offer you a free deferral option to Nov-21. You will be emailed if this is the case for you.
- If your exam has to be cancelled, CFA Institute will email you to arrange a deferral. Nov-21 is the next available slot.
There are also no new cancellations announced by Prometric other than what @mikey has outlined above.
Based on 2020 experiences, CFA Institute will understandably only announce a cancellation when they are completely sure that’s what they’re doing, which means it might be announced pretty last minute.
There currently isn’t a voluntary deferral process. For December 2020 CFA Institute did introduce one, but that was when it was a paper-based exam and they were encouraging candidates to move to 2021 CBT exams. Anything’s possible, but I’d say it’s unlikely they’ll announce a voluntary deferral process.
Let us know if anyone has more questions!

CFA Institue postponed the June 2020 exams to December 2020, and even then some locations (cities) had their Decebr 2020 exams cancelled. Affected candidates were given a choice of refunds or a free postponement to a future exam window.
But this is not exactly translatable to what’s happening now because these were paper-based exams with big test centres.
If it was still paper-based exams I would say most Indian cities are definitely not going ahead but these are small CBT test centres now.

We totally get it and we’re on your side on this. For our part, we try and get the most accurate information to help everyone, but we don’t have the power to change CFA Institute’s policies on this.
As far as lobbying CFA Institute for changes, perhaps in time we can figure out a process to help candidates in that respect as well.
Hope things will get better for those in affected areas soon.

This just in – CFA Institute has cancelled May 2021 CFA exams in these cities:
- Mumbai
- Navi Mumbai
- Bhopal
- Pune
- Indore
- New Delhi
- Bangalore
- Chennai
Candidates affected will be contacted via email “in the next few days” to arrange rescheduling to the November 2021 exam window. There won’t be a choice in exam windows as I understand it as “space is limited”.
Refunds? I’m assuming just as before, if your exams have been twice-impacted, you’ll be given an option to cancel for a full refund.
What about other cities? CFA Institute have not ruled out more cancellations. In fact they’ve stated that they are “actively monitoring all exam centers” and it’s “possible that additional cities will be impacted”.
This page will be updated as we learn more. If you have more news, just reply to this thread!
Edit: added new cities.

Hello,
I could not schedule my exam for May21when cfa institute provided an option in Feb and March. Although, on the website of cfa institute I am still a registered candidate for level 3. I have not received any notification for exam cancellation or rescheduling the exam. I was suppose to appear from New Delhi, India.
Tried contacting cfa institute but no response. Is there any way I can reschedule it to Nov21?
-
::
I would advise emailing CFA Institute at info@cfainstitute.org stating these points:
- That when you wanted to schedule your exam there was no suitable availability in your city (I’m assuming this is why you didn’t schedule it during Feb and Mar)
- Your location is New Delhi and that was to be your location
- Your preference on rescheduling, either to November 2021 or to an alternate location
I would send this ASAP to put this on the record, then maybe try chasing up during business days over the phone.
Good luck!

Heyy, I have selected Jaipur,India (non-cancelled centre) as my centre for CFA Level 1 exam. Here, Covid-19 cases are rising day by day. It won’t be possible to give exam and my family will also not allow at this point of time. CFA Institute has given us the option to defer the exam to Nov 21. But in November 2021, I will be having my Chartered Accountancy (CA) Exams, so it won’t be possible for me write exams in November also.
Are there any chances that exams will get cancelled at Jaipur location? Please suggest, what do I do?-
::
‘Cancelled’ test centers all get postponed to November. So if your test center is postponed it’ll be to November, no choice there.
If November clashes with your CA exams, I suggest you try and contact CFA Institute (info@cfainstitute.org, +1 434-951-5499 or toll free numbers here) and see if you can defer to a 2022 exam.
It is a genuine issue and CFA Institute should offer some kind of schedule flexibility here. I get that they don’t have availability earlier than Nov, but they should offer and be OK with 2022 dates.

The email doesn’t specifically say that you’re committed to changing your date once you click, so you might be alright.
There would be plenty of people making the same mistake as you, or changing their mind after clicking. It would not make sense for CFA Institute to force everyone who clicked once on a button in an email to defer to Nov-21.
You’ve emailed them immediately, so that’s covered. If Prometric doesn’t cancel your test then I’d assume it’s all going ahead in May.

- Pune
- Indore

We are also receiving reports that candidates in other at-risk locations, including other Indian cities and Ontario, Canada have been emailed by CFA Institute offering an option to defer their May 2021 exam to November 2021.

I have applied for a deferral option from May to November and it says that a mail shall be sent from cfa institute regarding steps to take the November exam but till now I haven’t received any such mail and 3 days have passed since I opted for deferral.Did anyone else receive any mail from cfa institute after opting for deferral?

Cancellations can happen anytime up to exam day. So there won’t be an ‘announcement of non-cancellation’, as you put it.
Exams start on 18th May so theoretically your exam could still go ahead, but there’s definitely a chance of cancellation.
Not much use speculating. Just keep checking, and if you’re a 300Hours subscriber you’ll be notified of the latest in postponements every week.

Thanks for replying Zee, I have my CA exams in Novemnber 2021, that’s why I cannot use defer option for Nov 2021 for CFA Level 1 exam. I cannot give exam in May 2021 also, due to high risk of COvid-19 in my state. You earlier suggested me to mail CFA Institute regarding that. I did so last week, but have’t got any reply yet. Now today is the last day to use deferment option, What can I do? Should I wait for cancellation of exams in my area? As you said that exams can get cancelled upto exam day but Institute have written on their website that there will be a review of testing feasibility in all cities in early May and accordingly we will receive the Prometric appointment mail. I have received the Prometric mail also just now. What do I do?
-
::
Here are the facts with your situation as I understand it:
- November is not an option for your CFA exams because you have your CA exams then.
- May is not an option for you either because of Covid and concerns for your well-being when taking the exams.
- The optional deferral is for November 2021 only.
So if you click ‘yes’, you are literally stating you are OK with your CFA exams taking place in November 2021. Which you are not.
So I would recommend, and this is just my recommendation, that you NOT confirm that you would like to defer to November 2021.
This means you’re committing to May 2021 which is what you originally signed up for. But there’s always a chance that CFA Institute will cancel exams in your area, in which case there’s a better case for you to request a later date.
Good luck!

Thanks for replying Zee, I got your point but in that case I will be having huge risk if exams does not get cancelled in my area. I have received this prometric mail also (attached). Does this mean that testing feasibility is checked by the testing agency and they can take the exam by following Corona protocols? Does this mean that my exams cannot get cancelled and it will be taken as per schedule?
Sorry for bothering you again. -

- Which location are you in?
- Were you offered an optional deferral?
If by ‘deferred by exam to November window’ you meant that you clicked on the ‘Yes, I’d like to defer’ button in the CFA Institute email, that likely means that CFA Institute just hasn’t worked out the logistics of deferral with Prometric yet.
In any case, make sure you email CFA Institute at info@cfainstitute.org to:
- Inform CFA Institute that Prometric are still not informed of your decision to defer
- Reconfirm that you’d like to defer to November 2021
Good luck!

Thank you for the response Zee. My location is Jaipur, India and I got the same mail that JoyM shared now. Yes, I got the option to deferral and I clicked on the ‘Yes, I’d like to defer’ button in the CFA Institute email.
I have mailed by issue to the mentioned email Id with the screenshot of the defer. I will reconfirm, as suggested by you for November 2021 exam.
The situation is really critical in our region and I hope the CFA institute soon inform Prometric about my deferral. I feel unsafe giving the exam in May 2021 window.

Hi.. I have opted for the “defer to November window” (my exam is supposed to be in May, in Hyderabad, India).
But till now I have not received any response mail on this rescheduling, nor any changes have been shown on the cfainstitute.org page.
Is my exam rescheduled to November or not ?
Can you please clarify.
TIA

I haven’t been contacted by the CFA Institute regarding cancellation of CFA May 2021 examinations in India (My examination centre is in Navi Mumbai, India). All my colleagues & friends seem to have received email communication from the CFA Institute regarding the announcement of cancellation of CFA May 2021 examinations across all locations in India.
I have already checked my personal contact details under my account on the official website and they are accurate. Can anyone suggest what to do?
