Before you commit to ACCA, it’s worth knowing exactly what you need to get started and what the full qualification actually requires from entry to membership.

ACCA requirements: A quick summary
The standard ACCA entry route needs two A-Levels and three GCSEs (or equivalent) across five subjects, including English and Maths. If you don’t meet this, the Foundations in Accountancy route has no minimum entry requirement at all, and a mature student route exists for candidates 21 or older based on relevant work experience instead of academic qualifications.

Completing the full qualification means 13 exams, three years of practical experience, and the Ethics and Professional Skills module, a minimum of three years even if you clear every exam faster.

Note that ACCA is moving to an 11-paper structure from September 2027, though entry requirements are expected to stay broadly similar.

What are the entry requirements for the ACCA Qualification?

acca requirements

The standard entry route requires two A-Levels (or equivalent Level 3 qualifications) and three GCSEs (or their equivalent), across five separate subjects including English and Maths. You don’t need an accounting or finance-specific subject, any A-Level subjects count, as long as the GCSE requirement for English and Maths is met.

To check whether your specific qualification meets this threshold, ACCA maintains a minimum entrance requirements database you can search directly.

What if I don’t meet the standard entry requirements?

FAQs about AAT and ACCA

There are no minimum entry requirements for Foundation-level study, you can start at any level regardless of your academic background.

ACCA specifically recommends beginning with the ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management Accounting (RQF Level 2) if you have no formal qualifications, or if it’s been a while since you last studied, since candidates who work through the Foundation levels in order tend to perform better once they reach the main ACCA exams.

The Foundation-level structure runs across four tiers:

LevelQualificationExams
RQF Level 2ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management AccountingFA1, MA1
RQF Level 3ACCA Diploma in Financial and Management AccountingFA2, MA2
RQF Level 4ACCA Diploma in Accounting and BusinessFBT, FMA, FFA
TechnicianCertified Accounting Technician (CAT)All of the above plus 2 of FTX, FFM, FAU

Completing the Diploma in Accounting and Business gives you exemptions from the three Applied Knowledge papers (BT, MA, FA), meaning you enter the main ACCA Qualification at Applied Skills level. All Foundation-level awards also require the Foundations in Professionalism ethics module and one year of relevant work experience.

Can I start ACCA without any formal qualifications?

Yes, through the mature student route. If you’re 21 or older, ACCA considers relevant work experience in place of academic qualifications.

You register in the usual way, select the mature student option, and provide details of your work experience for ACCA to review as part of your application.

Do I need to prove English language proficiency?

If your prior education wasn’t conducted in English, you’ll typically need to provide evidence of English proficiency as part of your application, ACCA maintains its own list of recognised English language qualifications that satisfy this.

If your schooling was English-medium, or your existing qualification documentation already demonstrates this, you generally won’t need anything further.

There isn’t a single universal test score published on ACCA’s own registration page, so if you’re unsure whether your background qualifies, it’s worth checking directly with ACCA rather than relying on a specific score you’ve seen quoted elsewhere.

What documents do I need to register?

You’ll need to supply:

  • Educational documents: naming your qualification, signed and stamped by the awarding institution, with transcripts showing subjects and marks, and your completion date or certificate
  • Proof of identity: a birth certificate, passport, national ID card, or driving licence
  • Official translations: if your documents aren’t in English, both the original and a licensed translator’s English translation

All of this is uploaded during the online application, which takes around 10 minutes to complete if you have everything ready in advance.

How long does ACCA registration take?

If you complete your application fully online with all required documents, you should be registered within 5 to 7 working days. If you need to send documents or payment by email instead, allow 10 working days from when ACCA receives them.

What fees do I need to pay to register?

You’ll pay an initial registration fee, plus a subscription fee in your first year if you’re eligible to sit three or more exam sessions in a calendar year.

Exemptions are also charged per exemption awarded, and are only available for the first nine exams (Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills), not Strategic Professional. For the full current fee breakdown, see our ACCA fees guide.

Can I get ACCA exemptions based on qualifications I already hold?

Possibly, and it can significantly shorten your route through the 13 exams. Exemptions depend on what you already hold, an accounting degree, AAT, CIMA, ACA, and others all carry different entitlements.

See our ACCA exemptions guide for the full breakdown by qualification, or check your specific entitlement using ACCA’s own exemptions calculator.

What exams do I need to complete the ACCA qualification?

To qualify as an ACCA member, you need to complete:

  • 13 exams (fewer if you’re granted exemptions),
  • three years of practical work experience, and
  • the Ethics and Professional Skills module.
LevelExam Papers
Applied KnowledgeBusiness and Technology (BT), Management Accounting (MA), Financial Accounting (FA)
Applied SkillsCorporate and Business Law (LW), Performance Management (PM), Taxation (TX), Financial Reporting (FR), Audit and Assurance (AA), Financial Management (FM)
Strategic Professional: EssentialsStrategic Business Leader (SBL), Strategic Business Reporting (SBR)
Strategic Professional: Options (choose 2 of 4)Advanced Financial Management (AFM), Advanced Performance Management (APM), Advanced Taxation (ATX), Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA)

You can gain your three years of practical experience before, during, or after your exams. The Ethics and Professional Skills module becomes available once you’ve completed your first three exams, though ACCA recommends finishing all nine Applied Knowledge and Applied Skills exams before starting it.

A structural change is coming. From September 2027, ACCA is moving from 13 papers to an 11-paper structure.

ACCA has confirmed entry requirements are expected to stay broadly similar under the new structure, and students who register before the change will have their progress mapped across via ACCA’s transition tool.

How quickly can I complete the ACCA qualification?

ACCA runs four exam sessions a year, with a maximum of four exams per session and eight distinct exams per calendar year, meaning it’s theoretically possible to complete every exam in two years.

In practice, most candidates take longer once work and other commitments are factored in. Regardless of exam pace, the three-year practical experience requirement means the qualification takes a minimum of three years to complete, even if you pass every paper on your first attempt.

For Foundation-level study, there’s no time limit, though the first two Diploma tiers (RQF Levels 2 and 3) can typically be completed in around 6 months, and the Diploma in Accounting and Business or CAT Qualification in around a year.

FAQs

What are the minimum ACCA requirements?

Two A-Levels and three GCSEs (or their equivalent) across five subjects, including English and Maths. If you don’t meet this, you can start through Foundations in Accountancy instead, which has no minimum entry requirement at all.

Can I do ACCA without a degree?

Yes. ACCA doesn’t require a degree at any entry point. The standard route only needs A-Level and GCSE-equivalent qualifications, and Foundations in Accountancy has no formal requirement at all.

Is there an age limit for ACCA?

ACCA’s own registration guidance doesn’t publish a fixed minimum age, though most candidates enter around 16 to 18 after completing school-leaving qualifications. There’s no upper age limit, and the mature student route is specifically designed for candidates 21 or older without formal academic qualifications.

How many exams do I need to pass for ACCA?

13 exams across Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills, and Strategic Professional, plus three years of practical experience and the Ethics and Professional Skills module. Exemptions can reduce the number of exams you personally need to sit.

How long does it take to complete ACCA?

A minimum of three years, due to the practical experience requirement, even if you pass every exam on your first attempt. It’s theoretically possible to clear all the exams in two years given ACCA’s four sessions a year, but most candidates take longer once work and life are factored in.

Can I get exemptions for previous qualifications?

Yes, and the number varies significantly by qualification, from around 3 exemptions for AAT Level 4 up to 9 for a fully qualified CIMA or ACA member. See our full exemptions breakdown for the major pathways, or check your specific case using ACCA’s own exemptions calculator.
