Advanced Financial Management (AFM) extends Financial Management (FM) into genuinely advanced territory: complex investment appraisal, mergers and acquisitions, treasury risk management using derivatives, and corporate restructuring. It’s one of the toughest papers in the whole ACCA qualification, and every mark comes from written, constructed response answers.

Quick summary

  • AFM is a 3-hour-15-minute exam with two sections: Section A (1 compulsory question, 50 marks, including 10 professional skills marks) and Section B (2 compulsory questions, 25 marks each, including 5 professional skills marks each)
  • AFM’s pass rate has run 44-47% over the last five sittings, currently 47% as of June 2026, among the lower pass rates in the whole qualification
  • The “own figure” rule matters more here than almost anywhere else: a correct method built on an earlier wrong number is still rewarded, so giving up on a difficult calculation costs marks that were still available

Our ACCA AFM exam tips consist of ACCA’s own AFM examiner’s reports (Sep 2024-Jun 2026) and what past ACCA candidates say actually worked. Read on for these insights.

What’s the format of the ACCA AFM exam?

Here’s a quick summary of the AFM exam format, which is helpful to know what you’re up against. Full detail is also available directly on ACCA’s own AFM exam support page.

SectionQuestion typeMarksTime budget
Section A1 compulsory case-study question50 (40 technical, 10 professional skills)~97.5 minutes
Section B2 compulsory questions25 each (20 technical, 5 professional skills each)~48.75 minutes each

AFM runs for 3 hours 15 minutes and has quarterly exam windows (March, June, September, October, December). The pass mark is a fixed 50%. Every question is constructed response; there’s no objective test component at all. Section B is also compulsory, not a choice between three questions.

ACCA AFM TipsWhy
Read the exact verb and object of each requirement before draftingEvery sitting flags candidates answering a different question to the one set, such as discussing general centralisation benefits instead of the specific relocation issues asked for.
Keep going even when early calculations are wrong or incompleteThe own-figure rule means a correct method built on a wrong number is still rewarded. Candidates who give up on later linked requirements after a difficult calculation lose marks that were still fully available.
Structure every report with sub-headings and end with a brief conclusion or recommendationCommunication marks are consistently lost by candidates who submit answers with no report format, or who nearly finish a report but omit the concluding section.
Never sit on the fence; always state a clear recommendation or conclusion when one is asked forMarks are awarded for making a definite recommendation even when it isn’t the expected one. Vague or non-committal answers score poorly regardless of the analysis behind them.
Compare your calculated results back to any target, premium, or threshold stated in the scenarioCandidates who calculate the figures but never relate them back to the scenario’s stated benchmark, such as a desired 20% gain, miss straightforward discussion marks that depend on that comparison.
Develop assumptions and scepticism points beyond a bare statement“It is assumed growth is 4%” earns little. Explaining why the assumption might be wrong and its impact on the figures earns both technical and scepticism marks.
Demonstrate commercial acumen by relating discussion to specific scenario facts, not generic textbook pointsHigher marks go to candidates who spot scenario-specific angles, such as a stated threshold being a guide rather than a hard rule, rather than reciting standard advantages and disadvantages.
For any hedging recommendation, always state whether contracts are bought or sold, the number of contracts, and the relevant contract monthThis is consistently under-stated even when the calculation itself is correct, and candidates lose marks for giving an incomplete instruction to the board.
Round derivative contracts to a whole number and treat any resulting under or over-hedge as immaterial unless told otherwiseTime spent hedging a fractional balance on a second market is wasted, and using a non-whole number of contracts is marked as an error.
Use the spreadsheet response area for all detailed calculations, not the word processorMarkers can award partial credit from visible workings in a spreadsheet even when the final figure is wrong. Calculations buried in prose with no workings shown often can’t be credited.
Only answer what the requirement actually asks forTime spent on unrequested content, such as general treasury centralisation debates when only specific issues were asked for, earns nothing and steals time from marks that were available.
Read every technical article ACCA publishes before the sitting, and use the specific method it signalsCandidates who used the lock-in method when the question already gave forecast rates, or who weren’t aware of a recently updated technical article, lost marks unnecessarily.
Learn precise definitions of AFM-specific terms, such as management buy-in vs buy-outConfusing definitions can mean an entire requirement is answered from the opposite perspective and scores close to zero even with strong effort.

ACCA AFM TopicTopic-specific Tips
Currency futures hedgeState buy or sell, the number of contracts, and the month. Calculate basis to find the expected futures price only when no forecast spot and futures price are already given.
Interest rate collarFollow the full step-by-step sequence: identify the call and put combination, calculate the number of contracts and net premium, calculate basis for the expected futures price, determine whether each option is exercised, then calculate the effect on net receipts. Don’t stop halfway through the chain.
Money market hedge vs derivatives choiceExplain why both a margin-based product and a non-margin product might be chosen together, since each carries basis risk and margin cash flow implications, rather than just listing generic advantages of each.
Political and operational risk assessmentStructure the answer explicitly under “political risk” and “operational risk” headings using the specific facts given, not a general list of unrelated concerns.
Free cash flow to firm or equity valuationDon’t deduct interest when calculating free cash flow to the firm. Discount FCFF at WACC then deduct the market value of debt to reach equity value, or discount FCFE at the cost of equity instead.
Perpetuity and delayed perpetuity with growthApply the growth rate only where the scenario states it applies, and discount a delayed perpetuity back using the correct year’s discount factor. Never carry forward growth into periods the question says are held flat.
Percentage gain in shareholder wealth (M&A)Don’t assume you must engineer a stated desired premium; use it only as a benchmark to assess your own result against. Split the total gain to reflect actual ownership proportions in a share-for-share deal, not automatically 50/50.
Number of shares issued in a share-for-share exchangeWork directly from the stated exchange ratio and the target’s existing share count rather than assuming a round number.
Post-acquisition equity value via free cash flow multipleWhere the scenario states market capitalisation is a multiple of free cash flow to equity, apply that multiple directly to the given figures, adjusted for synergies, rather than defaulting to a DCF or perpetuity growth approach.
Synergies in an acquisition valuationTreat stated annual synergies as a recurring cash flow subject to the same valuation treatment as the underlying cash flows, not as a one-off addition, unless the scenario says otherwise.
Cash offer vs share-for-share offer discussionBring in points relevant to the specific offer type, such as cash giving certainty of value but potentially triggering CGT for the target’s shareholders, rather than a generic acquisitions discussion.
Competition or regulatory authority investigationFocus only on the authority’s actual remit, market share and competition impact, since valuation fairness and takeover-conduct compliance are typically outside its scope. A stated percentage threshold is usually a guide rather than an absolute trigger.
Overseas investment NPVInflate cash flows cumulatively, deal correctly with year-of-disposal tax allowable depreciation and residual value, and treat the initial working capital outflow as immediate with only the change in later years. Keep workings separate from the cash flow table.
ESG issues and recommended actionsIdentify each issue and its recommended action as a clearly linked pair rather than blending general ESG description together, and check that a suggested action is actually feasible given the scenario’s constraints.
Dividend capacity and shortfallRemember interest expense reduces taxable profit, and base overseas tax adjustments on full overseas profit, not just the dividend remitted. After calculating capacity, compare it against the dividend actually required, since the capacity figure alone doesn’t answer the question.
Mark-to-market and margin account calculationsPresent these in the currency the margin is actually held in, not converted to the reporting currency. A full explanation of the process can still earn marks even where the calculation itself goes wrong.
Forwards and OTC options vs futures discussionAnswer specifically on risk reduction and cash flow impact as asked, and explain the mechanism of basis risk rather than just naming it.
Asset beta ungearing and regearing for a divisionUse the market value of debt, not book value, when ungearing the parent’s equity beta, and read a stated percentage split literally rather than as a percentage of another division’s beta.
Divisional valuation for divestmentUse only the assets and liabilities the scenario says transfer with the division, and apply a previously-calculated cost of equity or beta downstream rather than reverting to the parent’s original figure. Discuss genuine strengths and weaknesses of each method rather than just picking the higher number.
Sell-off vs demergerState the distinction precisely: a demerger creates an independent legal entity no longer controlled by the parent and generates no cash proceeds, unlike a sell-off.
