CFP exam FAQ
Can I register for CFP before completing the coursework?
Yes, you can. To be able to sit for the CFP exam, you need to get your coursework completion verified by CFP Board before the Education Verification Deadline.
If verification is not received by the deadline, your exam registration will be withdrawn, and a $500 postponement fee will be applied.
How do I schedule or reschedule my CFP exam within the same exam window?
Prometric runs the CFP exam in the US. To schedule or reschedule your CFP exam, go to Prometric’s CFP webpage to select the schedule or reschedule option. You will be asked for your confirmation number.
You may reschedule from a remotely proctored exam to an in-person exam, or vice versa.
There are no charges for scheduling changes more than 30 days in advance of the exam appointment. For changes between 5-29 days before the exam appointment, there is a (re)scheduling fee of $100. Finally, no changes are allowed if there is less than 5 days of your scheduled exam appointment.
If you would like to change to a future exam window, it would need to be postpone ($500 postponement fee applies) or withdraw from the exam (of which only $200 is refunded from the fully paid exam fee). Not great options from CFP Board to discourage this from happening.
How do I defer/postpone my CFP exam?
You need to contact CFP Board via examinations@cfpboard.org to do this, not Prometric.
A $500 postponement fee applies, and only one postponement is allowed once per registration. The last day to postpone an exam is the same date as the late registration deadline for that exam window. For July 2025’s exam, this means 25 June 2025.
A postponed exam must be rescheduled within the next 2 exam windows. This means if you are postponing from a March 2025 CFP exam, it needs to be rescheduled for either July 2025 or November 2025 exam.
How do I withdraw my CFP exam?
You need to contact CFP Board via examinations@cfpboard.org to do this, not Prometric.
The last date you can withdraw from your CFP exam is the same as the late registration deadline. You are only able to recoup $200 refund from the full exam fees paid.
That said, CFP Board will consider waiving the fee forfeiture in the case of a medical or other emergency. Such request for a waiver must be made in writing and supported by verifying documentation from a third party. A waiver request must be received within 10 business days after the close of the exam window.
What if I did not turn up for my CFP exam appointment?
Your entire exam fee would be forfeited. If you would like to retake the test, you will need to register and pay the relevant exam fees again.
Failure to turn up to an exam would also count as an attempt, where CFP Board has implemented a 5 times lifetime limit on the CFP exam.
