Up::5mjgavilanes said:retaking level 2. what’s the best material Schwesser and Wiley?
I was planning on going for Schweser, worked well for me in L1 but @ellieb19 is giving me doubts! Are there any differences in L2 that may call for a different provider? Schweser has a discount right now I think, so would want to decide soon.

Dominique –
I’ve been doing a lot of examination of test systems and other helpful tools. The following schedule should work very well with the Schweser QBank materials. I might go into Turbo mode and just use the Schweser Notes and not read the books at all, but still do ScreenCasts. If that’s the case Sat & Sun are just Schweser notes, DB postings and move up QBank by one day. Disclosures: Your Mileage May Vary, Caution as contents are hot, Be careful when handling live rounds.
Starting 09/14 & 09/15
Sat & Sun
– MSA – Read like a banshee. Plow thru as much material as possible and watch the ScreenCasts.
– MSA – Write the first discussion topic for each class on Saturday and then a reply one on SundayMonday
Testing items
– MSA – run thru the review questions posted to level set for each course
– Schweser – run thru QBank ‘Basic’ level testing on the Ethics for this week (25-50 questions) for as many LOS’s as possible
DB items
– Write at least one reply topic for each course (DB is DONE and it’s only Monday!)Tuesday
Testing items
– Schweser – QBank only – Basic + Intermediate for each current class (total of 25-50 each class)
DB items
– MSA – do another DB to max points (I never want to get below max points on DB… I think I’ll need every one I can get!)Wednesday
Testing items
– Schweser – QBank repeat of Tuesday
– MSA – redo the Monday practice questions and rewatch ScreenCastsThursday
Testing items
– Schweser – QBank – full throttle: Basic + Intermediate + Hard 50 questions each current class
– MSA – redo the Monday practice questions if need be or just go to 75 questions for each class on QBankFriday
– Take the scored Quizzes
– Schweser – Level set all (cumulative) previous weeks info with only Basic questions starting from the beginning of the course
– Define weak areas from the Schweser examsSaturday/Sunday 09/21 & 09/22
– MSA – Read like a banshee. Plow thru as much material as possible and watch the ScreenCasts.
– MSA – Write the first discussion topic for each class on Saturday and then a reply one on Sunday
– Schweser (Sunday) – Repeat Friday testing and build confidence and take more questions or level up to Intermediate.Monday and Tuesday are the same.
Wednesday is the same except add a second QBank of all previous weeks’ material to build confidence like the recent Sunday.
Thursday is the same
Friday is the same except the Schweser test this time is going to increase the difficulty to use Basic + Intermediate questions
As weeks move on, we follow this pattern. The only difference is the cumulative Q Bank tests will start to get longer and have all three levels of difficulty.
I am also going to use TimePrep to keep me on track and adjust accordingly.
FYI – this is the same structure I have used to pass every other exam I have taken over the last few years. S7, S66, FL Life & Annuity, CRPC, GMAT, etc. The onyl difference is not just using a test prep system but also a university degree… so it took some work around.
Let me know what you think.
Have a good evening!

Hi @shickles, good to see you join us from south east asia! As a guide, it’s best to do end of chapter (EoC) questions after each reading, and leave the last month completely free for pounding those practice papers/questions under exam conditions. For level 1 you can do some Question Bank questions as well after a chapter, but that may slow things down. Your goal is to cover and finish all your readings with understanding, before hitting the practice questions like crazy – that’s what the last full month is for.

@imdnextbuffet I read somewhere on the internet, there are people who have an MBA from Ivy league B Schools find it difficult to clear the CFA exams. There are some who even drop out. It also mentioned that maybe its partly due to the fact that they tend to discount the difficulty level of the exam.

That’s exactly what I meant. Even an average guy can clear the examinations all at one go, if he/she keeps himself grounded, has a solid plan in first place and sticks to it till he/she dies.

@barmoran89 excellent question!
According to 300hours’s analysis it is a disadvantage. Imagine my shock because I also have a finance background.
But worry not I think the disadvantage is mostly due to overconfidence. Don’t discount the difficultly of the CFA exam because you have a finance background. You can get a detailed report here http://www.300hours.com/cfa-results-analysis.html

Ohh.. Common misconception then? I am doing my executive MBA in finance (completed all modules and going to do dissertation after June CFA exam). @Sophie – You are right, there is no such reason. It’s just that was a little keen on completing the Claritas programme before taking up CFA challenge as I feel that way I would be in a better position in understanding CFA level 1 syllabus being from a non-finance background and that will ultimately help me in clearing level 1. You don’t recommend taking up Claritas?? As you are well experienced so thought of taking your viewpoint.

@rushikesh welcome! Looking forward to seeing you around here!
We’ve actually found in our most recent CFA results analysis that candidates with prior finance educational experience do worse on average compared to other demographics. Our theory for that is not ability, but rather not starting early enough etc.
So it might be useful to start early and see what the syllabus is about in more detail – but with your background I’m sure it won’t be a problem! 🙂

Just a little determination…. and a whole lotta false motivation and sheer bravado!
I’m trying to get the others at Creighton over here as well. FYI it’s great for the Masters degree, but you really need a plan to attack the exam.
If I had any brain cells left after going through Reading 8 this past few days, I’d do a Covariance of the probability of passing L1 with Creighton vs Creighton + Schweser. Or a Bayes’ Formula since I went to Schweser after I decided on a study criteria based on Creighton.
Yeah, I gotta slow down or I’ll burn out by December! 8-} … Now where’s my TimePrep app? :-/ What there’s no more coffee!?!?!?!?!? :-w

Hi everyone! I’m from Malaysia and I will be re-taking CFA LEVEL 1 in June 2014 after failing in June 2013 – I simply did not put in the effort then so I’m hoping I’ll do it right this time. I’m using ELAN (minus videos though), I’m almost done with Quantitative Methods (finished Ethics maybe about 2 weeks ago) so I’m certainly happy with my progress compared to last time!
I just want to know when is the best time to attempt practice questions, is it immediately after a reading or after finishing a whole topic area e.g. FRA? Thanks!

Hi @bigdreams, welcome to the community! There are tons of candidates here who don’t have finance background but are doing well in the exams too – see our study here, in fact having no background whatsoever does put you in a strong advantage, counterintuitive I know! All you need for CFA is time and effort to understand the material, plus good exam technique which you’ll pick up easily here through the forum and blog posts 🙂

Hi everyone, level 1 candidate & M&A intern. Recently completed the Corporate Finance Qualification, how does the CFA compare in terms of difficulty? (obviously the material encompasses a wider range of subjects). Thanks
-
Up::4
Hello @Pat_Halberstram, welcome to the community! Congrats on the CF qualification. I think there’s some overlap, of course as you said CF is only one small part of the whole CFA syllabus, which helps if you’ve learned that already. I’d say it’s slightly more difficult just because of the breadth of materials, but not something that can’t be done with discipline, effort and exam technique.

Hi all. This is Rishi from India. Absolutely new to CFA. I have an MBA, and I have worked in the technology industry for almost 9 years now. I have been a technical guy, and now a technology solutions marketing guy. Finance was not such a strong point in MBA (actually accounting, pretty ok in financial analysis though), but was always intrigued by it. Want to take up classes for CFA, primarily to re-build on my fin knowledge, study alongside my wife who is preparing to take up CFA I in June of 2014, and then eventually appear for it by Dec 14 (Yeah! Gonna take my time!). Hope to see more such “tangential” folks like me willing to take up the challenge! Cheers…

@sp2013 – Aw thanks. I’m sure you will, derivatives will always have a special place in my heart. It’s my first finance role there and I enjoy it because it’s an intuitive subject for me. It’s all about the hockey stick option payoff charts 🙂

Greetings,
This is John from Arkansas. It’s great to be a part of this forum and hear
about its members’ CFA experiences. I went to a small, Midwestern school for undergrad
and my MBA. Currently I work as a compliance regulator. I plan on taking Level
I in December 2015. Right now I’m reading Rachel Bryant’s book as a prep guide
(she’s how I became aware of this forum) and plan to begin studying before the
end of this year. I’m really looking forward to this experience and
contributing to the community. Why the CFA?
Long term I’d like to do equity research or asset/portfolio
management. I really enjoy the analytical and quantitative side of finance (ask
me that after 300+ hours of studying and I may be less enthusiastic) and want
to keep my skills polished while gaining a qualification which will help me
with career moves down the proverbial road.I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous and intimidated by the CFA
program, but I look forward to learning a lot about the material and myself
along the way. That’s enough deep talk for now. Please do reach out to me if you think there’s
a chance I could be of assistance. And of course anyone in Arkansas looking for a
study group or otherwise, I’ll be checking this site regularly.Best,
John

Hi all! I’ve just started my planning process and I’m a bit ahead of schedule as I plan to start studying in July15 for the Dec15 exams. Just finished the CPA exams so taking a well deserved 5-6 months off before I throw myself into fire once again. I have a finance undergrad and a good hodge podge of Corp Finance, Accounting and consulting experience. (MBA & CMA too). At a bit of a crossroads in my career and thinking it will be so great to get back to my investments/public finance roots; hence the shot at the CFA. See everybody around the forum!

Hello everyone. My name is Mike, I’m a bit on the older side compared to most on this site (40) and sitting for level 1 this December. I’m not in the industry, and doing this primarily because the subject matter interests me, and as ‘unemployment insurance’ should my job in my current industry end, and I find I can’t command the same salary I do now, I’ll have a very real option of switching careers.

Hi Everyone, i just cleared the Level 3 exam and had a question about references. The CFA site says “three professional references are required unless you have a reference from a regular member of the society to which you are applying. In that case, two professional references are required”. I know someone in what would be my local CFA society. However, while applying for the membership the application form does not give the option to choose that this particular reference is from the local CFA society. How does the system differentiate that 2 references are enough in this case?

LOL @imdnextbuffet, so not mediocre, in fact it should have been a breeze given you’re in equity research!
Never judge book by its cover, so I would say never think just because one is working in “a” particular field can excel in their exams with an ease. I have this unique case, where a friends friend who was IIMA grad failed CFA Lvl2. Having job in the said field will give some ease but not that easy as far as my ability to crack the exam goes. May be I’m too conservative in approach so like to take least risk possible hence deferment of exam.
-

Since I do have a finance background, I can say with confidence that a lot of what I did in university it repeated in the CFA curriculum (so it is embarrassing on our part to do so poorly) – actually in level I there was barely any new material but I still had to study due to the sheer volume of the material!
Also I feel that the CFA exam is just one memorizing game – but that might just be me. -
Up::3
Hi all – I’m also part of the 300 Hours team, and am the semi-techie around here. If you have any bugs or feature requests you can direct them to me via PM or just start another discussion 😀

Definitely not just you. I don’t find the CFA material necessarily tough – the concepts taught aren’t necessarily difficult to understand. It’s remembering all of them at the same time to take a 6 hour exam that’s the challenge.

@bamoran89 welcome!
Hopefully we can dispel some of your nervousness. If you have any questions ask away. -
Up::3
@bamoran89 – a finance background does have an advantage in the sense that the materials are familiar, but according to this interesting study, this somehow led to lower performance on average, most likely due to complacency and overconfidence, as @diya mentioned.
Now that you know that, the lesson here is not to take the materials too lightly even if we have learnt them before!

Ohh.. Common misconception then? I am doing my executive MBA in finance (completed all modules and going to do dissertation after June CFA exam). @Tobi Hey, my suggestions are: plan to study at least 250 hrs, have 1 month left before the exam to do mocks and read the summaries (you will forget most of what you studied 4 months back), read this website’s past blog entries, they are really useful.
Passing the CFA is not about studying and understanding the subjects, you need to make an additional effort, only 35% pass this exam, you have to do better than 65% of the people (people that are usually good at this and also want to pass this test)

Haha! Coming from a country with 20%, 40% and 45% tax bands, it’s lovely thanks @hairyfairy.
Don’t be fooled though! They get it back in other ways. Housing is extortion, so is schooling and groceries. I figured out that I need to earn about £65,000 just to cover expenses here. Any excess is discretionary spend.
However, 25p a litre for petrol is fun… I’ve never seen so many 4.0 to 6.2L 4×4’s in my life.

Hello Charter,
I am new to this forum. My doubts if anyone can sort out would be very helpful for me
I am in my first semester in MBA-Finance from a decent college.. I am looking forward to give my CFA level 1 in June,2016 and finish at least one level during my MBA.The companies that come for college placements wont give me that benefits/Roles of CFA ;(Companies like CRISIL only come that too for Credit research profile, several Banks for Relationship Mgmt.) ;Thus I am not able to see any benefits to do CFA as I wont be able to get the benefits out of it in short run.
Should I go for it .? I am in doubt kindly help me think wisely and take a decision .

Hi Everyone!
Thanks for allowing me to be a member of this great forum. I am a recent graduate who has been working at a credit union (in different positions) for about 6 years. Working in retail/commercial banking was a good learning experience but after going through school I realize I want more. My goal is to break into “high” finance (IB/PE/HF/AM/ER/CF/S&T, etc) and I’m currently researching whether or not a CFA could propel me in my endeavors.
Hoping this forum can help me figure this out.

Hi all. I cleared level 1 in Dec 12. Thought to give sometime for myself so giving level 2 in June 14, in between plunging into reading loads of novels(my interest) & FRM as I dont have MBA after bachelors, so thought to have CFA&FRM as degrees. Working as research analyst since 2+ years.
@imdnextbuffet Welcome! We’re testing out a Book Recommendation section so would love to hear your recommendations! @DollarsToDonuts is also looking at equity research so would love your opinions on this (thread here). -

@Vijay some topics were exceptionally easy but FRA kills me since I wasn’t too exposed to that and my understanding of fixed income is also a little shaky since never did much of that in university either.
I find ethics really easy, but I think that is mostly due to the random ethics course and a couple law courses I took.

Hello.
My name is Chris. With nearly a decade in corporate FP&A I’m exploring whether the CFA is the right next step for me. From what I’ve read of the site so far, this looks like a good place to do some of that exploration.I look forward to contributing.
-
-
Up::2
@Zee, actually the opposite. I successfully transitioned from FP&A to healthcare IT a few years ago. The industry experience has been very good, and my company has been very good to me, but I don’t see staying in this part of the industry as a good long term fit. And, although I never thought I’d say this, I miss aspects of FP&A.
My background is very non-traditional and that continues to be a stumbling block in both interviews and career advancement. So I’m looking at the CFA to both mitigate some of the persistent “negatives” and to open up some avenues that are currently closed off to me.
For where I’m at in life, it seems a more cost-effective option than a traditional MBA and I’ve been very impressed with the Charterholders with whom I’ve worked in real life.
Thanks for asking. And thanks for the the warm welcome @Zee and @Sophie.

Hi guys, I just offered my L1 exams. I followed 300 Hours all these days and think its an awesome platform. Earn my living as a Corporate lawyer.
On a last note, Thank you Sophie for all the wisdom. You’re my hero.

Hi there,
I am an accountant in Stamford, CT (USA) and have been following the blogs and postings here for a while. I just took the level 1 exam a few days ago and I’m exhausted (although that’s mostly from all of the golf and drinking I’ve done since the exam, haha). Although I studied a lot for the exam, and I don’t think there was much that was unfair about what was asked, I’m afraid I may have failed because I grossly underestimated the stress on test day and how tough it is to be totally locked in under the circumstances. I guess we’ll see in 8 weeks.

Looking at the syllabus there seems to be nothing that I haven’t seen before (even the Ethics are familiar) but I guess it is not only about knowing the material but being available to use it swiftly in exam conditions that will assist in success in CFA!
I hope to benefit and contribute further to this thriving community now and in the future 🙂

Dear Friends, I took and passed my CFA level 1 in 2006. I took CFA Level 2 twice and failed twice. Needless to say extremely disappointed and discouraged and I gave up – had two kids (not from discouragement ofcourse and life got so busy that I never came back to CFA. Its time to retry again and I have many questions :
1. Is my CFA Level 1 still valid?
2. Have they started a new rule that “One needs a 4 year investment experience” to hold a CFA charter?
3. I want to take Level 2 in June 2015 but I would like to start brushing up – would anyone be willing to sell their books/materials to me after they are done with Level 4. I would ofcourse buy the newly released material next year. But i want to pretend as though i am taking the exam in December and will use mock exams to see if i still have it in me!Thank you so much for your time. I am so glad I found this site

@Maverick how’s the pay though? I’d imagine a move means higher pay so that balances out (somewhat anyway). And cultural differences? Sorry never been so have no idea how it’s like 🙂
Hi @artyeasel. The pay for most is very good and will outstrip what they’ll earn domestically, with the added benefit of no tax (not applicable to Americans though (sorry)).
You have to be prepared to deal with the cultural differences, like if someone says they will do something, then they might. If they say they’ll do something tomorrow, then it’s not happening, not at all. Can’t eat or drink at all in public during Ramadan, no giving your wife a kiss in public, ever…
It’s okay, but you have to remember total self-restraint (never swear at anyone unless you like jail), and everything you need has to be followed up with the relevant parties involved up until completion. To be honest a lot of ‘locals’ or nearby nationalities they ship in hate saying no, so they smile, and say “yes sir” but have no idea what you just asked of them.
It is a big difference and many encounter culture shock and go home, but if you’re open minded and can live with the fact that some are earning $30,000 a month while others are earning $180 a month while working 7 days a week and living in labour camps, then it’s a decent place to live.

Hi all. Working for a financial software provider company in Paris I plan to sit the CFA L1 or the CIPM L1. My understanding was that after the registration it is mandatory to sit the exam in the next few months (For example registering today I have to sit in the June Exam).
As I don’t have financial background (Excepted my 8 years of work in the big financial industry), I was afraid not to be able, with job and family, to properly prepare the exam. In order to validate my little financial skills I decided to first pass the Investment Foundation Certificate (Ex Claritas). Started the preparation and the level is clearly not really high.
Am I wrong to start with this certificate? As I saw that some peoples plan to pass the CFA 1 in December I thought that maybe I was wrong thinking that if I registered today (The only to have access to the preparation documentation. This is not the case for Investment Foundation, as the documentation is available before registration) I must sit to the next exam session and can’t postpone to December for example if I feel not enough prepared.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

@CFACountdown just go for it. It can be tough when you have problems and issues on the personal front. I’ve had my share. Just put your head down and work towards your goal, thats all we can do. Like someone had said “I’m not saying it won’t be tough, but it’ll definitely be worth it.” Goodluck :-bd

So guys, I just ordered all my Schweser package and am ready to start studying but I have a general question about the exam. How much of an advantage does having a finance degree / background give an individual?
-
-
Up::1
Very true @Diya. As someone rightly said, Level 1 tests the breadth of your knowledge. Not the depth of it. 🙂 It will be a cake walk if you have finance background.
-
Up::1
@Diya, Lucky you. I am really scared of the ethics questions. I am having a kind of mental block I guess. Though people say that subject is test of your English and common sense, I have been consistently avoiding that subject. But now the time has come and I just started it today. 🙂

I’d say at max 1/3 of the syllabus is what you’ve learned before in accounting, mainly FRA section. The rest may be covered but not in the same focus/depth as CFA, so I would cautiously as yes you can do Level 1 with a little (not significantly) reduced prep @gavinloudfoot. 🙂

Moved to sunny (well, it is today) Edinburgh earlier in the year when my partner got a job here, so I was able to spend a solid ten weeks focussed on L1 prep while I settled in here. That might not seem like a lot of time calendar-wise, but I was able to devote at least 3-4 ‘high quality’ hours each weekday to study, including LOTS of practice questions. (There’s a big hint as to my one piece of advice!) We shall see next week if it was sufficient! Had I been working I would have wanted 4+ months, and that’s with a reasonable level of background knowledge.
Once L1 was done it was job-hunting time. Now I am waiting on background checks before I start work. I may sit L2 next June – I need to see what the demands on my time are like once I settle back into work and various other commitments.
Feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions. Are you in Edinburgh or over West?

@Zee, thanks! Don’t worry considering that failing a session will put my plans back quite hecticly, I have already started, in fact today I have been deconstructing the syllabus to identify specific requirements and realising the scope and breadth of the curriculum has reinforced my urge to prepare!
Also, I am still a student so planning is key to managing my degree and this expensive extra (CFA) 🙂

I’m a newbie to the website so I thought I’d say hello! I just finished my associates degree and have been working in the financial services industry since 2004. I’m currently working as an associate relationship manager and have decided to study for my CFA (its a longshot I know). Although I don’t have the formal education my current role provides great resources with current CFA members who would be more than happy to help with my studies. Anyone else here not have the formal education but are still shooting for their CFA? Or am I the only crazy one? 8-| -

Yes it does @Pat_Halberstram, but not the double entry aspect if that’s what you mean! It’s more of various accounting concepts, how/when to apply them, and how to analyse various ratios.

Helloooooo everyone. I am a Level 1 candidate. I had no idea I wanted to do CFA specifically. A bit of financial issue. I completed my ACCA Dec ’12 and haven’t been able to find a job yet. I had like finance during studying for ACCA and a few people I knew were going for CFA. So I applied for the CFA Access scholarship and I actually got it. I guess it was just time for a new beginning. I haven’t started studying anything so far. I didn’t know anything about CFA. So I am spending my day today googling CFA and researching it. Found this site and it looked good so joined it. I am hoping to start studying real soon and hopefully find a job as well. Fingers crossed.

And housing in the UK is not extortionate @Maverick? 😀
Ahhh… Zee, just seen this one mate.
Hmmm, housing at around £1,500 a month for a pretty decent place in the UK vs £3 to 4,000 a month for something that doesn’t even have back garden… It’s also around £7,500 to £12,000 a year to send a 6 year old kid to school.
Not forgetting of course that you can go shopping in the UK for £50 a week for family of 4. Here you’d struggle to get out of Carrefour for less than £200 (the big monthly shop is more like £350).
It’s not a cheap place, but weighing that off with next to no crime, wall to wall sun for 9 months straight and plenty of other benefits… tough call.

Hello everyone, I am a level 3 candidate in June 2016. I wrote Level III in June 2013 and failed. My background is in Actuarial math (P, FM, and MLC under my belt) and stress testing banking systems. In June of 2014 I left the industry to pursue a career in education… well, and snowboard more. I am currently in Bangkok teaching computer science until March 2016. I’m also finishing the last few courses for my B. Ed. out here.
For various reasons I’ve decided to write Level III in June 2016 and pursue a career as an Investment Counselor in 2016 after my CFA exam. I have already began reading the material and plan to be writing practice exams by March 2016. I ain’t failing this time!
I have been a lurker for a few years and figure I should dive in and start to participate in the community. Thank you for welcoming me to the community.

I work in politics at the moment – I don’t live a financial district either. My education isn’t business or economics. I meet with financial institutions in my job and pension funds. The material has me interested in taking up a career in finance.

Hi @imdnextbuffet! Pity you’re not joining us for Level 2 this June, but you have ample time to prepare then.
Hi @reena, I know, I had thought so much on this matter once I received my results, me being lazy bum thought to give some time to myself and plunge some brownie time into novels and I was kind-off unsure too regarding, will I be able to cope up with the L2 in matter of 4 months? As I am full-time employed, time was insufficient for mediocre guy like me to attempt the exam & clearing it off.

Thanks I just did.

We did analytics in the last Dec 2012 exam and found that candidates with finance educational background (but no finance work experience) tend to have the lowest pass rates by far compared to other profiles.
My hypothesis is similar to @ajfinance and @imdnextbuffet – that underestimating the exam is what will kill you. You don’t need prior experience or education, just discipline and a fairly good brain.

Hello –
I am a Level 1 Candidate and work for as a financial advisor. I have my CRPC, but wanted to do much more in the word of finance than just advisement. Thus I am pursuing (with zeal) the CFA. The Schweser program (Premius Plus) and also in the Creighton University MSAPM program.I downloaded your studying spreadsheet, got Groove Track set (playing Classical selections) and added StayFocused (120min… who am I kidding, 10 min seriously!) to Chrome.
With all of the material here + Schweser + CU, I already feel a level of confidence I can be ready by June 2014. Unlike a lot of people, I really actually like studying and my family has been through many of the rigors of my past exams.
I am 44 now with a family and it will be interesting, but that is why I am giving myself 10 months… extra conservative compared to the 8-9 mentioned on the site.
So, HERE WE GO!!!
3:-O BTW low the Two Cows pict… made me crack up!!!

I’m still a student (MSc Finance), and I have a little experience back in France in an Asset Management boutique.
Anyway, brace yourself! -
