Perhaps jumping the gun here, but thinking about my registration as a CFA member and wondering how the process is like. Charterholders, would you care to share experiences?

What happens if you say work in a bank but not in a finance related role? I basically work in operations in payment processing. Basically a bank teller except for business customers and not individuals. I don’t have anything to with financial/investment decisions (or any decision making for that matter!).

I know this is an old thread, but had a similar question. Does being registered help? I had to take 7 & 63 for my last job, but I worked more with mortgage sales than investments. My new job definitely fits the CFA criteria, but I only have a year in the position and I’m a L3 candidate.

It’s quite straightforward, asking your boss or a colleague to act as professional Sponsor is helpful.

That would be challenging to be honest. If your role is strictly operations it would be more difficult to pitch the case for relevant work experience.

@james010 don’t lose hope. Try approaching your local CFA society. Try for an affiliate membership. If you have 4 years of work ex already, they’ll redirect your application to regular membership. If not accepted, you will still get affiliate membership till the time you complete the work ex. requirement. I worked in operations as well, but I got regular membership.

Definitely try applying. Also, seek out references from charterholders, maybe someone in your local CFA society. I guess you need only 2 references if both are charterholders.

If you’re in a finance type job usually there’s no problem. I’ve never heard of a guy that has passed all exams, works in finance and still has work exp issues.

It’s a pretty simple process. In general the CFA Institute are looking for work experience for at least 50% of your job role that qualifies as ‘investment analysis’, i.e. any kind of activity that contributes to investment decisions (whether that decision is made by you, your manager, your client, etc matters less).

So it’s an exercise in looking at what you do, and highlighting the relevant bits. It doesn’t take much time at all (say, comparing to writing your CV).

You could also ask friends who are charterholders to be your sponsor. it’s preferable that one of your sponsors is your supervisor, but it’s not necessary.

We actually have an infographic detailing all you need to get a CFA charter (see below). Original post here: http://www.300hours.com/1/post/2012/09/heres-everything-you-need-to-do-to-be-a-cfa-charterholder.html

I agree with @policedog, if you’re working in finance there should not be a problem. Also, getting in touch with your local society helps. If someone from the local CFA society provides you references, that would be great. :-bd

Might try applying for regular membership then. I have 4 years experience – the question is whether it’s the right 4 years or not.
