in reply to: Is anyone else able to log on to Analyst Notes? #84772Up::5
Welp, got a 57%, so more or less the same as what I have been getting on my practice exams. Thanks for the free practice.
in reply to: Do you invest your own assets? #85565Up::5I started managing my investments right at the start. I did a lot of active management in the early days, but I stopped for two reasons:
Didn’t have time to actually perform the research necessary to make sound investment decisionsI found managing my own money a lot more stressful than my day job!
I’m mostly passive these days, but I do the odd bit of stock-picking to keep sharp and because it’s fun.
I also bought bitcoin really early, invested like $50, it’s now a few thousand, so I’m a happy camper.
Up::4In the BA 2 plus, is there a better way to use the memory function rather than STO 1/2/3 etc and RCL 1/2/3 when trying to bring the answer from one calculation to start another calculation?
in reply to: How to finish mock exams faster? Taking too long… #85269Up::4Best way is to time yourself per question. If you’re in L1 that’s 90 seconds per question, then you can allocate how much time you should be using for reading the question, calculation, checking, answering, and possibly rechecking.
Up::4You guys are freaking me out with your freakishly early start dates…. or is it the norm for L3? God I hope not.
in reply to: Has CFA helped your career? #85522Up::4I think there’s a lot of personal benefit gained from having investment knowledge. So many of my friends, all high-flyers in banking, are shit at managing their own money. A lot of it is also due to not having the time or focus to allocate their assets, but it’s shocking how little finance guys know about managing their own money. Personal finance and institutional finance can be quite different.
For example, I’m currently experimenting with algorithmic bitcoin trading. While I have the technical know-how to code up trading strategies, the CBOK gives me background to inform my decisions and strategies.
in reply to: Tips to improve mock scores? #84644Up::3Thanks for the tips! Is it worth taking one mock exam early in the game to ‘guide’ what you should be studying?
in reply to: CFA Level 2 and CAIA Level 1 in 16 months #84691Up::3Hey @BarryGoldschlager, I’m interested in CAIA as well. What made you decide to take the plunge?
in reply to: Annuity question —RRSP account #85066Up::3My understanding is that it should be:
PV = $120,000 (money PUT IN account)
PMT = $8,000 (money GOING IN account)
N = 30 (number of years)
FV = -$1,500,000 (money COMING OUT of account at the end, or a final ‘payment’)Alternatively, you could view it this way:
PV = -$120,000 (money LEAVING PERSON to go into RRSP)
PMT = -$8,000 (money LEAVING PERSON to go into RRSP)
N = 30 (number of years)
FV = $1,500,000 (money RETURNING TO PERSON from RRSP)in reply to: Self-made study notes #85470Up::2Just started a job last week where I contacted the CEO for a position, company has 150 employees. It works, but I agree that I can’t see it happening in a mega-huge company.
in reply to: Question about Study Strategy – Level 1 June 2019 #85065Up::2towengreen said:Question regarding AnalystNotes. Rachel Bryant swore by them in her “Direct Path to the CFA Charter”. She leaned on them heavily for L1. Admittedly being a bit cheap when it comes to the 3rd party study guides.Has anyone had good experiences with AnalystNotes as a sole supplement to the Curriculum?
I think it’s fine as a supplement but not a replacement for the curriculum. Analystnotes is good for reference but I don’t think it works well as a main provider.
L2 and L3 analystnotes may not be as useful though.
in reply to: Jittery for results! #85381Up::2Anyone got an official email on when results day would be? Or if not, when would this likely be?
Up::2Yeah the problem with imagining the end is that I immediately visualize NOT reaching the end… and having to do this yet again… and still not be guaranteed it’s over. Then panic.
Up::1I started super-early in November, took a break through christmas and new year, restarted in February. I’m just done with the notes, planning on going through the secret sauce revision material before starting on practice exams.
My degree is in anthropology so no help there, I’m doing this because I’m 1.5 years into a finance role.
