Hi folks. I work with Citi within the Business Intelligence team. I am from a software background and my finance knowledge is limited. I intend to do the CFA with an intention of moving into a financial planning and analysis role. Please guide me on any basic learning i must have before i start preparing for CFA level targeting June 2014.

Hi Sophie, thanks for such a quick response.
Is Dec 13 exam a realistic target. Also for level 2 can Jun 14 be aimed for.. I know I am looking too far but trying to plan it out so as to give my best shot.

Hi @kthomasjoseph, welcome! Finance background is not a pre-requisite for passing the CFA exams. The exam is here precisely to bring everyone up to speed.
In fact, from our observation it is not necessarily a plus point as the pass rates for candidates with no finance background outperforms those who have had finance background (but don’t work in finance), and on par with those who work in finance-related roles (without background education).
May I ask why you’re waiting for June 2014 for Level 1? You can easily take Dec Level 1 now and there are quite a few candidates with non-finance backgrounds here too, to go through the journey together. Why wait?

Oh you got the Kaplan notes? That’s quick @kthomasjoseph! That should be sufficient, although many use CFAI curriculum to refer to sometimes.

Hi kthomasjoseph.
I think you are in good time. I joined/registered last week and received the material on post today(pretty quick from USA to UK).
I have a software background and I DON’T work on City(I do work in Central London), but I think is possible (in my opinion) to achieve a pass mark for this December. All the best anyway.

@altins, thanks for sharing! We have quite a non-finance people here too, in software, like @vincentt and @shchan. I’m impressed with all your determination to learn new things to achieve your career goals!
That said, passing in Dec Level 1 is totally possible. Cos you’ll have all our friendly community’s attention and we’re here to help 😉

@kthomasjoseph -start early. Everyone’s level of dedication needed for the CFA exams is different, so starting early will give you a better idea of how much work you’ll need to do.
You should be fine with Schweser, at least to start with.

Yes @kthomasjoseph, I started in June/July when I took Dec Level 1 a while ago. Be prepared to sacrifice weekends, but it’s possible. you have many peers here who just started sharing their study plans.
Well, I managed to do Dec Level 1, then June Level 2, and June Level 3 consecutively. It’s hard work, but possible. There are lots of Level 2 candidates here who are revising for Level 2 having passed Dec Level 1 too, like @diya, @vincentt

Hi @ankitvora03 – we can’t help you with these requests as it’s not legal, and not something we encourage in the community. Do check out the Reviews & Offers section, we have got some good discounts for our readers there for materials.
