I had to renew my passport since it expired recently and just realized I still haven’t received my new one yet. My exam date is August 13, so I’m worried I won’t receive my passport in time. I mailed my passport application on May 14, thirteen weeks from my exam date. After explaining why and when I needed my passport, both the Chancery Clerk office and USPS told me that it would take up to ten weeks to get it back. The U.S. Dep. of State website also said up to ten weeks, at that time. I just checked my application status on their website, which currently says “In Process” and states that my application wasn’t received until June 24, six weeks after the date it was mailed! Additionally, the website is now saying it could take up to 18 weeks.

I’ve tried reaching out to find out more info but haven’t had any luck. I’m not sure what I need to do and am beginning to panic at this point. Is there another way around this or are there any other options for not having a current passport? Would I be able to postpone/reschedule my exam to another date/window without forfeiting my registration fees?

The only think I can think of is to contact and convince CFA Institute to allow a substitute ID given your circumstances – e.g. proof of your passport being with the Dept of State and your driver’s license. If CFA Institute agrees, you’ll need to make sure your exam center (Prometric) are clued in on this as well.

It is very unlikely that CFA Institute will allow you to postpone your exam without penalty.
