About Kaplan Schweser
Picture

Kaplan Schweser is one of the biggest players in the CFA provider market. Developed by Dr Carl Schweser and Dr Andrew Temte in 1990, the Schweser Study Program became the CFA industry leader in the mid-1990s, and hasn’t looked back since. The Schweser Study Program was acquired by Kaplan Inc in November 1999. Dr Temte became the CEO of the Schweser Study Program, and today is the President of Kaplan Financial Education, covering not just CFA, but other qualifications such as  ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CFP, CAIA, and FRM.

Kaplan Schweser today has 12 full-time CFA-qualified faculty members, and 13 other full-time faculty members who hold other professional designations such as CAIA, CFA or FRM.

An Overview of Kaplan Schweser’s CFA Packages
Kaplan Schweser offers four basic packages tailored for different candidates’ needs, ranging from a basic SchweserNotes package priced at USD349 to an all-included PremiumPlus package at USD1,499. You’ll probably need a bit more practice than what’s included in the SchweserNotes Package (we recommend four to six practice exams depending on your CFA level) though.

You can order products individually, but you’ll probably save more going with one of the packages. You can, of course, order a few bits extra if the package you’re eyeing is missing out something you’d like to have.

A summary of what’s included in each package is in the table below, followed by our thoughts on their product range.

Kaplan Schweser’s Detailed Product Range
Picture

Kaplan Schweser’s product range has changed over the years to reflect the needs of CFA candidates (e.g. CD-rom packages in the early 2000s), but they’ve always been pretty up-to-date with investing in the latest educational formats, and more or less been the provider with the widest range of products available. Here’s an overview and description of their current product offering:

Study Notes: Clear and concise

  • Called SchweserNotes, the five-volume set is everything Schweser thinks candidates need to study for to pass the exam. The notes are more concise than the CFA Institute curriculum, helping candidates better process the CFA Learning Outcome Statements (LOS). There are also practice questions and self-tests at the end of each topic – although they are usually more to check that you’ve read everything, rather than testing you on the same difficulty level as the real exam. SchweserNotes are available in print form, in ebook format, and even in audio format.

Practice Exams: Six full exams, plus live and online mocks available

  • Kaplan Schweser offers two Practice Exams packs (Vol 1 and Vol 2) with three practice exams each, for total of six full practice exams for each level. Each practice exam consisting of an AM and PM paper, and they are available in print or online.
  • They also offer an Online Mock Exam, which is timed, taken live on a set date and includes a Mock Exam Tutorial, which is a kind of detailed, guided walkthrough the mock exam questions and answers after you’ve taken the exam.
  • Live Mock Exams – fully proctored, in-person, timed 6-hour exams – are also offered in most large CFA cities. They may be free as they could be sponsored by a local society or business, so definitely check out availability in your city and register if there are still places for your exam.

Review Notes: The Secret Sauce

  • The Secret Sauce is Kaplan Schweser’s compact guide for candidates as the exam day approaches. This smaller book is handy to bring around once you’ve completed the study notes. It contains concise, readable explanations of the major parts of the CFA curriculum, along with tips, strategies, plans and analyses that help inform your exam-day performance.

Question Banks: practice with thousands of questions online

  • Available as an online platform, the SchweserPro QBank has thousands of multiple-choice questions and allows you to customize your own exams by topic and number of questions. Detailed answers are supplied as usual, and you can also download the QBank for offline access. Learn more here.

Classroom & Video Courses: Attend live or online

  • Schweser’s classroom courses consist of weekly classes and on-demand video lectures. It includes all the material you need, although you do need to be disciplined in attending classes and watching the on-demand video lectures beforehand. Live weekly classes are currently offered in about 10+ cities, but if live classes aren’t offered in your city you can attend live online. Enrol early – but even if you miss any classes, all classes are archived online so that you can catch up on them later.

Review Courses: Varying lengths and intensities to suit all needs

  • Schweser offers a range of review courses in varying duration and intensity. They’re offered in certain cities, so always check to see the latest availability.
    • 1-Day Workshops focusing on one topic, such as Financial Statement Analysis.
    • 3-Day Workshops covers key topics for the entire exam, practice questions, instructor tips, and includes all the materials you need plus the Secret Sauce book.
    • 5-Day Workshops are intensive courses conducted over five consecutive days, with a thorough review of key topics, practice questions, instructor tips, and includes everything you need including the Secret Sauce book.
    • WindsorWeek is a 7-day workshop conducted in the University of Windsor (Ontario, Canada). Consisting of hundreds of candidates from all over the world, it’s a full immersion in the CFA curriculum, with 48+ hours of instruction, all the materials you need, one-on-one tutoring sessions, a mock exam, with lodging and meals provided (different packages available).

Pass Guarantee
Kaplan Schweser offers two layers of guarantees for failing candidates:

  • First is what they call The Schweser Commitment, which gets you off the entire exam prep package for the following year if you fail. Conditions are:

    • Applicable only to Essential, Premium, or PremiumPlus packages
    • You must answer at least 50% of the available questions from your QBank and Practice Exams
    • You must score at least 80% correct on the questions answered from your QBank and Practice Exams. You have unlimited attempts at each question in the QBank
  • Second is PassProtection, which applies to almost all their CFA study prep packages:
    • 50% off if you failed on a Premium or PremiumPlus package
    • 25% off if you failed on an Essential Package

  • Good instructor support: Even their SchweserNotes package include instructor support, which is great
  • All three CFA levels covered: Not all providers offer all three CFA levels, but Kaplan Schweser have been doing so for quite some time, and are fairly consistent across all three CFA levels

Cons

  • Price: It’s not the cheapest of options for CFA candidates, with the Essential package at USD649 (check latest offers)

Kaplan Schweser’s CFA Candidate Reviews
Picture

★★★★★ Excellent package
By y***** (Level II)

I used Bloombergprep for my level I exam and pass with it, but for level II I decided to use Schweser instead for some reason explained below:
Classic way of study suit a dino with pen and paper like me better.
Study notes really easy to understand with applicable mini questions for every LOS, it helps a lot with right on explanations and pointing which part we should remember or highlights and which part we have to skip for upcoming exam, always tempting to dig more for deeper knowledge, but if our concern is a specific level CFA exam, I think we need to scrap some of “too deep” understanding of specific topics for time-saving sake as we have massive amount of material in front of us.
Customized Qbank that have hefty amount of questions. This Qbank really ticked our competitiveness by comparing with others taking same situations practice. Careful don’t be too absorbed in the competition tho, its not the real exam.
Good study calendar that can be customized according our own schedule and automatically arrange our study routine including the practice exam with daily guided instruction about what we have to do with great detail. Big help there, since I’m far too busy (read:lazy) to make my own calendar and adjust it when some immediate event pop up and need to adjust my study schedule.
Buy self-study package that include 6 Full Exam! for me, 6 full exam are plenty enough, I finished 4 full exam for my level I and it definitely help.
The only minus point of Schweser Self Study is you will be alone for your study (well it called self-study for a reason) but if you decide to take better package, it will include a live class and review classes and you actually can have a small group using this provider material as most of candidates using Schweser up until now, in my area at least.
I do not have any rights to comment on the effectiveness though, since this is my first time using this provider package, after I get a good (pass) result for level II (finger crossed) then at that time I can review my study hours and can comment about its effectiveness better.

★★★★★ Worth it
By Ralph (Level I)

To start with the Value-for-Money, I was skeptical to put additional dollars into the CFA exams by buying material from prep providers. I believe that many of us (future-) candidates are. But we shouldn’t. The few hundreds dollars additional help you to:
– organize yourself better by giving you extra explanation on how to study, where to focus your attention
– understand and remember the materials much better because the content is presented in different ways (read, sum-up, practice, practice!)
– the practice questions and mock exams are very very welcome!

To sum-up, i believe that a somewhat shorter materials than the official one will help you focus to what is really important and make sure you remember it. But not only for the exam, with that much reading and practice, it helps remember the content for the years to come!

★★★★★ Used effectively for a last-minute cram
By r***** (Level I)

I used only the notes and read through few of the mock exam questions and answers. Since 90% of my studies for level 1 happened in the last 10 days, the notes were consice for me to be able to absorb most of the syllabus ( Note : Being a qualified chartered accountant with a background in most topics except economics and quantitative techniques helped in the last minute studies )

The mock test answers had reasonings behind the answer which was a bonus for me as I didn’t have the time to work out the exams and could only read through the questions and answers.

One thing I would prefer is more concept checker questions at the end of each reading.

I would also prefer if case studies for ethics was also included in the notes given its weightage. I had to read through case studies from the CFA institute module

★★★★★ Techincal difficulties of the live course is a let down. Otherwise excellent
By Hilary (Level I)

The online weekly course was probably the weakest of the resources, but that, undoubtedly, was due to the “live” aspect. We had multiple instances of technical difficulties. I would definitely recommend an in-person class, if available, over an online class. If one were offered in my area, I would have selected that. Aside from the class, the review materials are extensive. Of course, there can always be more questions. If one couples the K-S questions with those in the CFA materials, all topics are more than covered.

★★★★★ Worth the money to help you pass
By RobH_ZAR (Level III)

Unfortunately it is expensive if you are converting from USD to another currency so it is out of the reach of many students who live in countries with a weak exchange rate. But at the end of the day I feel it is worth the money – in my case i didn’t have the time or concentration to use the CFAI books so I was willing to pay up for the materials. I must give credit to the local CFA society here in South Africa as they facilitated the ordering and delivery of the Schweser materials which is a big bonus.

★★★★★ Online and mobile especially handy
By CM_Franco (Level I)

The ability to review the notes online and through mobile applications has made the entire experience significantly easier to study; however, a suggestion for improvement would be the ability to review two pages at a time. When reading through the material that references a graph that is on the next page, the flexibility of the online platform is really put to test. Having to flip back and forth is painstaking, where as a physical book is significantly easier to use.

★★★★☆ Very Good
By furrybean (Level III)

The kaplan schweser prep is definitely my go-to when it comes to studying for the CFA. i’ve used it for all 3 levels and the readings are very succinct and to the point without the background and history that’s often incorporated in the CFA texts. I do find that that the questions tend to be very easy, so if you really want to be prepared it’s good to go over the Kaplan materials and supplement it with CFA end of chapter questions.

★★★★★ Excellent
By Derick (Level I)

The Kaplan Schweser notes really prepared me extremely well for the exam on both levels. The material was easy to understand, followed a great natural flow and the end of topic practice questions really assisted me greatly. The mock exams I felt were more difficult than the actual exam which I felt meant that the material is great in preparing me for the real deal. Would recommend it to anyone.

★★★★☆ Concise and simple
By LT (Level I)

The Number one reason i like the Kaplan program is the concise and simple to understand notes it provides. For those challenged or pressed for time, it provides with a “to the meat” type of learning which is closely tied to the curriculum. The fact that each LOS and reading have corresponding directions to the curriculum, makes it even better for reference when there is a hazy topic.

★★★★★ Excellent
By cb (Level I)

Kaplan Schweser worked great for me. The package included printed books, Qbank and six mocks. The materials made the content easier to understand, the Qbank strengthened my understanding, and the mock exams were indicative of my score on the actual exam. I averaged a 74% on the six mock exams I took which was comparable to my 40/60/80 score on the actual exam of 73%.

★★★★★ High quality exams
By Haydawg (Level II)

Schweser’s exams are very high quality, perhaps even a tad more difficult than the actual exam. I used Schweser notes to produce my own summaries, coupled with the CFAI notes whenever material needed elaboration (primarily FRA). This strategy allowed me to achieve >70% in all topic areas in levels 1 and 2, and I will be following this study pattern again for level 3.

★★★★★ Excellent
By w***** (Level I)

With the sheer amount of base level knowledge you are required to have on the Level I curriculum, it is essential that you review all the concepts in a quick and efficient manner. Additionally, to fully grasp the concepts, it is necessary to do as many practice questions as possible to learn the minute nuances one might have missed in preliminary readings.
Write your own review>>

★★★★☆ Comprehensive and timely
By w***** (Level I)

Kaplan’s study guide is comprehensive and timely. The team at Kaplan updates their materials each year after the CFA Institute release their curriculum, so it ensure relevance. One thing that can be improved, however, is the value for money – The video lectures are especially useful and should be made possible if students want to purchase this separately.
Write your own review>>

★★★★☆ Essays makes practice tough
By h***** (Level III)

Level 3 notes are pretty good, but the format of essays make mocks not very helpful. I feel that I was left completely exposed in the essay part (i.e. the mock essay papers were not at all like the actual exam). But there isn’t really any alternative for me, CFAI curriculum is too dense for me, and helped me pass (just about).
Write your own review>>

★★★★★ Excellent
By JDCamacho (Level I)

If you’ve done finance or economics as your major, CFA currilucum might be a bit extense and gloss over many topics that could be resumed in less than a parragraph. Hence, schweser is very helpful for people that have a average background on finance and haven’t got time on their side.
Write your own review>>

★★★★★ Excellent
By Chuckleberry (Level II)

Providing many different avenues to study for the exam has allowed me to attack the material from many different angles. The Study Notes, Video Lectures, and even Audio Notes have all come in handy. The Online Class is what I will be reviewing right up until exam day.

★★★★☆ Good but videos hard to follow
By t***** (Level II)

L2 material was adequate, but I personally found the videos included very boring and hard to follow. Many of my friends found them useful, so I think it’s just a study method that’s not for me. I found practicing the L2 questions to be the most effective prep method.
Write your own review>>

★★★☆☆ We need to go deeper
By m***** (Level II)

Overall Kaplan Schweser most of the time misses the key substance in the LOS required to pass the exam. It ignores the depth required to address the requirements of the reading. Further the video lectures more or less are the repetition of slides.
Write your own review>>

★★★★☆ L3 lacking, but still best out there
By t***** (Level III)

I didn’t find Kaplan as effective in L3 as it was in L1 and L2. I think their questions tended to be a lot more numerical, and L3 had relatively more conceptual questions, and relied a lot on understanding the ‘point’ of each study session.
Write your own review>>

★★★★☆ Very Good
By w***** (Level II)

The Schweser Notes are a necessary complement to the CFA Institute’s readings, which can be quite dry since they are extremely technical and academic. With Schweser, I was able to grasp the concepts in a more functional and easier way.
Write your own review>>

★★★★☆ Very Good
By Ranjini Chakravorty (Level I)

The materials builds up consistency of the learning process, specially if you are working full-time and trying to juggle. It prepared me very well. I am using for my next levels. They have a mobile app which you can use on the go!
Write your own review>>

★★★☆☆ Not as difficult as real thing
By j***** (Level I)

Unfortunately the questions in the qbank are not as difficult as the questions on the exam which came as quite a shock. This is disappointing as the facility to make tailored quizzes is useful and a handy way to keep self testing.
Write your own review>>

★★★★★ Good notes
By r***** (Level I)

The notes were concise, to the point, but clear. It was very useful for stuff I had a little background in and the topics that I knew less about it was still very easy to pick up and understand. They explained everything very well
Write your own review>>

★★★★☆ Very Good
By Geff (Level I)

Kaplan did a great job for preparing me for Level 1. With that said, it’s important to still do the end of chapter questions out of the CFA Institute books to make sure that you’ve not missed any concepts.
Write your own review>>

★★★★☆ Fine for L1
By m***** (Level I)

For level 1 Schweser is fine, as it is pretty much foundation. Since the curriculum is broad in nature and won’t require intensive depth. Level 1 is the game of repetition, so schweser serve the purpose.

For CFA level 2 it’s so importatnt to grind through as many questions as you can. i think the Qbank in this case was the most valuable component because you get to see a wide variety of questions.
