It is implicitly assumed that we will retire and that we should all save for retirement. I have no problem with saving money simply by virtue that we should save for rainy days. It is retirement that I have a problem with, fast forward 40 years and I don’t see why I would give up what I love (hopefully I am doing something I love) to stay home and play golf or do whatever it is that will take my fancy. I wanted you guys to weight in on your thoughts on retirement and if you would retire. I think I would be utterly bored after two weeks into retirement.

I agree with @zee and @ajfinance though. I think retirement is not just about doing nothing. It’s about having the freedom to do or try what you want, without worries of bringing in a constant stable income…

Oh yes. I love this, but there are so many other things I love beside working. Sports is a big one, I love volleyball, table tennis, tennis… other hobbies of mine include gaming, music (playing piano), waking up late, traveling, poker… I would still read news and manage my own money with the knogledge I would have gathered, but it would just be one of the things to do that make me happy.

edit: I do almost all of those (not much since I started the CFA though), but I would like to spend more time doing those instead of working… we’ve got to diversify, don’t we? 😛

@Diya I took some classes when I was about 8 y/o but didn’t pay much attention to them. Then at my university, I chose music as an alternative course and got 6 months of classes of piano and 6 of guitar.

I started loving piano more since I started with the CFA… listening to it almost every time I start studying (www.jango.com/stations/266643968)

Not practicing right now, but would love to :p

I’d quite like to retire and chill for a while. I’d imagine I’ll get bored after a while, but then I have tons of things to catch up on (that generate no cash)!

@AjFinance I think if there is some particular talent that you want to learn – start enjoying it today, why delay pleasure to the future?

@Diya, I do explore interests and other learning opportunities I come across. I meant those that I might discover in the future, and those that I would find worthwhile at that moment 🙂 Plus you can’t really learn everything at once. Perhaps, there might be certain things that I would have wanted but couldn’t pursue because of various reasons. Moreover, there are certain activities and interests that you would want to pursue wholeheartedly without worrying about anything else, not even your job 😉

Slightly curious, I have roots from India so I’d like to visit some day in the distant future. Rumor has it that my ancestral burial grounds in somewhere in India – I always forget where.

Hi @Diya, I belong to Mumbai, Maharashtra. Well, and in the outskirts of the city is the place where loads needs to be done in many areas. I personally prefer education as I think it could multiply the overall development hence more literacy.

Retirement for me would be to start a new phase in life. Maybe start something new, or learn something new. Retirement is not necessarily just rest and relaxation. It would be pursuing a new career or a passion at my own pace without having to worry about the money 🙂

Such an interesting question – I’m still pondering what I’d do if I have enough money already. I’d invest actually! Put some away to tide me till I’m old and wrinkly, but other than that I’m interested to be a angel investor and learn how companies are set up and run.

so cool! I started taking piano lessons approximately 8 months ago and I am enjoying it so far. I first started learning in high school but I become more serious recently and went out and purchased the right equipment. Keyboard just wasn’t enough anymore.

I think we seem to talk about the same thing here. The implicit assumption is whether current work is what you would do if all jobs/work pay the same… if they do, one would naturally gravitate towards what they love doing, and probably not viewed as a job, hence the concept of retirement wouldn’t exist!

@diya, you should check out 4 Hour week by Tim Ferriss, definitely changed my perspective 180 degrees!

I know a few multi-millionaires – and they’re all young ones, some of them in their mid-twenties. They’re still driven to do something – everyone wants to push forward and achieve something whether or not there is money (or whether they need it) at the end of the goal. In fact they are some of the most driven people I know (which is why they’re multi-millionaires!).

I have some aims in life to achieve. Become a bad ass billionaire with my skills. Open a school for children in the region of my surrounding where the schools are needed at that moment and hire best professionals as much as I can and create a value to the society.

So may be, I would stop working but I would support things like this after I retire (from finance).

As they say, your have 3 stages of life. One is during your school/college years, second during your working years and third is what you do after you worked all this years.

My goal to retire would be 55.

Good point. Although I would argue that many things we’d love to do for a living is highly risky in terms of income. e.g. I would love to be a games programmer or tester, but I don’t want to risk the necessary years in building a good reputation at a meagre income, with no promise that this is going to work out. Same applies to artists, musicians, etc.

As you grow older this is something you can afford more and more. Unfortunately with a presumed family, as well as a natural tendency to stay at status quo (less fiery young blood?) the desire to try something new just diminishes.

Conclusion? One shouldn’t adopt the mentality of ‘I will work the crap out of myself, never mind what I want, and retire when I’m xx’. Blend into your actions certain decisions that put your passions first. And be honest to yourself with your passions: don’t adapt them to suit offered paychecks! 😀

I define ‘retirement’ as ‘when I don’t have to work for my daily bread’. I would still do something – but we all have to, even retirees!

If you mean I have to play golf, then no, I’m not retiring. 😀
