What does everyone think of Mark Meldrum and his videos for CFA Level 1?
I am living in Edinburgh and I am planning to take CFA level 1 exam. I already started with the curriculum combined with Mark Meldrum’s video.
Do you think the curriculum and MM CFA videos is a good strategy ?
I am also interested to go to a proper class and Kaplan Schweser propose some in Edinburgh. I am wondering if anybody took these classes ? What is your opinion of them ?
Thanks for your kind help,
Nicolas

Hey @unacsed passed L1 this past June using a combination of CFAI and (to a much lesser extent as I got closer to exam day) Schweser material as well as Mark’s videos. His videos were incredible — I’d listen to the audio while driving or going out for a run and come back to the video notes. Tons better than the Schweser videos in my opinion. Subscribed to his videos on his site for L2 – strongly recommend as a supplement to reading.

I’ve used his videos – so far they work great as a supplement. I use them when I need extra explaining for particular concepts because I find his explanations simple and doesn’t have to use the ‘official’ language that books do.
But I’m not sure if it’s a good idea to only use Mark Meldrum videos.
The NYSSA videos are also pretty awesome – Nathan Ronen is a great instructor.

Hi @unacsed – none of our team has personally used Mark Meldrum, but readers have written in about Mark Meldrum. He does seem very well reviewed.
Having said that, I’m not sure if just the combination of his videos and the curriculum would be something we’d recommend. I’d say if that’s your strategy, start with that, but monitor your progress carefully. If you’re not progressing as fast as you’d like, it’s best to change strategy early so that you have time to adapt.
Kaplan Schweser’s classes are popular and recommended – you can read more reviews of Kaplan Schweser here: http://www.300hours.com/kaplan-schweser/#.WO0rKRIrK88

Hi there jailer, I began my L1 study end of September 2016. I first started with CFAI readings but I found the book is a bit confusing. So I started to search around and from Mark’s videos on YouTube. After few videos, I found I understand the content much better from Mark’s videos than reading the CFAI readings. I follow the following steps to study for the L1 exam:
1. Write down the LOC for each section on a notebook.
2. Watch the video with 1.5x speed.
3. Jot down notes if necessary
4. Do the end of chapter questions.
5. Review the answer, mark the question I did wrong for review -

One thing to keep in mind, I found the video series missed some of the minor topics from the CFAI curriculum. I highly recommend to complete all end of chapter questions and practice as many questions as you can get your hands on.
Most importantly, time yourself when you do the practice exam and make sure you have at least 15 minutes to review your answer.
Good luck!

Hello,
As someone that has used Nathan Ronnen’s chalk and board several times as well as Mark Meldrum, I would hands down recommend Nathan’s material over Marks for several reasons.
1.) Mark has way too much content in his videos that don’t have a high degree that it will be tested.
2.) In my opinion Nathan teaches important content at a much slower pace that is explained more efficiently
3.) Nathan is a better resource in terms of contact and support. Nathan provides his person number and will call you to help you oit with troublesome concepts for candidates wheras Mark has been literally MIA since I bought his content. I have to pay for extra tutoring if I need extra support
4.) Nathan is ACTUALLY a charterholder and has been since 94 ( almost 30 years.)

The ‘issue’ I have with Mark Meldrum is that when he’s explaining, you completely follow his narrative and don’t take as much notes as you should. But he covers quite quite a lot of material especially at 1.5x speed, and at the end you realize that you don’t remember shit.
Take as much notes as you can and intersperse with EOC questions.

I passed level 1 with Mark Meldrum videos, end of chapter questions, Schweser practice exams (x4) and official mock exams. I think Mark’s videos are great if you want to understand the concept. However, make sure you watch the videos with 1.5x speed to save time and spend more time to practice. Good luck!

Are these from CFAI curriculum books or somewhere else? Also where do I find offcial mock exams?
thanks in advance,

Following this post, we are now 1 year later my initial question.
I used Mark Meldrum Videos for Level I but also Kaplan online training. I passed it last December
I used only Kaplan for Level II and I passed it in June this year.
I would not recommend my method for passing Level I and II because altogether, I reach around 1800 hours of study but I think Mark Meldrum videos are a good starting point to sense the motivation. I would recommend every newbie to start with few readings with his method before investing to much money on a more comprehensive one.

Mark Meldrum’s videos cover all the topics in the CFA curriculum Tomb of the Mask, which can help you understand complex concepts better.
