Is CFA the pathway to Asset Management for you? Or do you think CFA has also made you look at various potential finance careers, which you would be open to pursuing in the future? Also mention why.

Would like to keep my options open and see how things shape up. You never know where you end up till you do 🙂

I also think I tend towards portfolio management because my education is so finance heavy. I did a specialist in finance and a major in economics and then I got some Canadian only designation for chartered investment manager.

I never really used the CFA qualification in my career, since I never really touched finance (professionally anyway). But surprisingly it’s super useful in non-finance for these reasons:
1. It’s a respected qualification, and if you know how to market yourself internally you can use that to your advantage in your career even if it’s non-finance
2. People assume you’re awesome in finance-related stuff. Can be a double-edged sword here, but as you climb in seniority you get caught out less (as you’re expected to do less analytical work!). Just nod sagely and look wise.
3. Finance people that you encounter (e.g. in reporting, or M&A deals etc) give you more respect when they know you have a CFA charter, probably because they don’t / couldn’t! 😉 -

I definitely started my CFA to enhance my career, not for AM, and now I see that the knowledge learnt is useful in many areas, even outside of finance!

When I first started the program it was simply to learn more about finance but at some point I discovered a passion for AM. I honestly don’t see that changing but you never know, so it’s nice that the CFA provides options.
